Detailed Clinical Overview

HbA1c is a blood test that measures the proportion of haemoglobin in red blood cells that has glucose attached to it. Because red blood cells circulate for several weeks, HbA1c provides an estimate of average glucose exposure over approximately the preceding two to three months.

The test is widely used to monitor people with diabetes and contribute to the diagnosis of prediabetes and diabetes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does HbA1c measure?

A: It measures the percentage of haemoglobin in red blood cells coated with glucose, reflecting average blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months.

Q: Do I need fasting for HbA1c?

A: No, fasting is NOT required for an HbA1c test. You can have it drawn at any time of the day.

Q: What is a normal HbA1c level?

A: Below 5.7% is normal (non-diabetic). 5.7%–6.4% indicates prediabetes. 6.5% or above on two occasions confirms diabetes.

Q: What is eAG and how does it relate to HbA1c?

A: eAG (estimated Average Glucose) is calculated from HbA1c. An HbA1c of 7% corresponds to an eAG of approximately 154 mg/dL.
