The Quiet Epidemic in Indian Cities
Vitamin B12 exists almost solely in meat, fish, eggs and dairy. For a population where vegetarianism is widespread — and where even non-vegetarians eat animal products infrequently — deficiency rates are strikingly high across Indian urban studies. Age compounds it: after 50, reduced stomach acid impairs B12 absorption from food. Diabetes medication (long-term metformin) and acid-reducing drugs add further risk layers that most patients never hear about.
What makes B12 deficiency serious is its silence followed by severity. Early symptoms — fatigue, brain fog, irritability — are dismissed as stress. By the time tingling, numbness, balance problems or memory impairment appear, some neurological damage may already be established. Early testing converts this from a potential permanent injury into a simple supplement fix.
