Why Cholesterol Testing Matters More in India
Indians experience heart attacks earlier — often a decade before typical Western ages — and dyslipidemia is a central driver. Urban diets heavy in refined carbohydrates push triglycerides up; sedentary jobs suppress HDL; and genetics give many South Asians higher Lp(a) and small-dense LDL risk. Because none of this produces symptoms until an artery is already compromised, the lipid profile remains the single most cost-effective cardiac screening test available.
Guidelines generally advise testing every adult from age 20–25 as a baseline, then every 1–2 years if normal — or every 6–12 months when abnormal, on treatment, or living with diabetes/hypertension/obesity.
